Know first aid and CPR

Instead of having lunch yesterday like we were going to, we drove back home so I could take a shower to wash off the blood of a little girl. She died in the back seat of a mini-van that was struck by a speeding sports car yesterday afternoon in Scottsdale. My wife and I saw what happened, we stopped, and I called 911. I was an EMT and keep up my first aid training, so I began triage. The driver was in shock, but I didn't see any physical injury, so I looked next at the children. The two little girls in the middle seats of the van were dazed, but looked okay. But there was blood everywhere. Everyone was wearing seatbelts/shoulder harnesses and the airbags had deployed. Why was there so much blood? In the back seat were three little girls. Two were dazed and sobbing. The third looked like she had a broken neck and blood was coming out of her mouth from an internal injury. Her eyes were open, but the pupils were fixed and vacant. I got no pulse, carotid or arterial, on the little girl. It was so sad. I wanted to cry. But, based on my training, I left her strapped in and moved on to the living. My wife got out the two children in the middle seats. I carried out the two little girls in the back seat, who were covered in blood and crying. The driver went in and out of consciousness from shock. I stayed with her while my wife stayed with the four surviving little girls. I monitored vitals until help arrived. The little girl was on the way to her birthday party.

Take a first aid and CPR course, because you never know when you'll need it.
