Judged Michael A. Dornheim Award

I was honored to again be one of the judges for the Michael A. Dornheim Award, presented in honor of the late Michael Dornheim, a longtime reporter and editor at Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine. It is one of the most coveted awards in the annual National Press Club Journalism Awards and is presented annually to journalists who report about aerospace, defense, the airline industry, or aerospace science and engineering. This year’s winner is Christopher Freeze of Air Line Pilot Magazine for ‘ALPA at 90’. Honorable mention went to Tom Risen, North America air transport reporter at Cirium Dashboard, for his solid beat coverage of the aviation industry.

National Press Club’s 48th annual Dornheim Award

I'm proud to again have been a judge of the National Press Club’s 48th annual Dornheim Award for writing about aerospace, defense, the airline industry, or aerospace science and engineering. Winner was Kiera Feldman of the Los Angeles Times for her yearlong in-depth investigative report “Toxic Fumes on Airplanes Make Crews, Fliers Sick.” which revealed that toxic fumes from jet engine oil and other aviation fluids seep into the air on planes with alarming frequency. Hundreds of passengers and crew have been sickened in recent years and pilots have even become incapacitated while in flight.
