No one threw a tomato at me!

Communications Manager at City of Fairborn, Ohio

13m •

Great conversation this week at the PRSA Dayton event hosted by Steven Solomon on creating an effective crisis communication plan. One thing working in TV news taught me early on: it’s not if a crisis will happen, it’s when. The organizations that respond best are the ones that prepare before the pressure hits. A strong crisis communication plan is more than a document sitting on a shelf. It’s about trust, preparation, clear messaging, and knowing how to communicate quickly and accurately when it matters most. I appreciated the practical insights and real-world discussion on how organizations can better prepare for challenging moments and protect credibility with their audiences. Thank you to PRSA Dayton and Steven Solomon for hosting such a valuable session!

Local communications professionals win big at Gem City PR Awards

Dayton, Ohio. –  The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Dayton Area Chapter celebrated the 2022 achievements of public relations at the Gem City Awards banquet presented by CareSource held on May 24, 2023 at Top of the Market. The ceremony is held each year to recognize the best talent in public relations throughout the Miami Valley.

"We have an amazing community of marketing and communications professionals here in Dayton and the Miami Valley," said Steven Solomon, Dayton Area Chapter president. "It's truly an honor to pause and celebrate their accomplishments."

Eight local businesses were recognized in six categories for their superior work in public relations, with three PR Awards and 12 Awards of Merit given out during the evening. Businesses and individuals submit nominations for the Gem City PR Awards each year. The nominations are then judged by a group of PR professionals in a sister chapter (PRSA Iowa was this year’s reciprocal judging chapter), determined which entries will receive a Gem City PR Award or an Award of Merit based on overall scoring.

Crystal Allen, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, accepted the Best in Show award recognition of the article titled "MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Kids in West Dayton Need School Supplies and More," which was published by the Dayton Daily News on Oct. 15, 2022. Volunteer Hannah Krafka, media relations specialist at CareSource, contributed to the article and its successful publication. Allen was also recognized for the positive news coverage generated by the Club under her leadership.

My presentation covered my journey into my PA role, what I currently do in terms of media and public relations, my involvement as Dayton's President-Elect in PRSA, and examples for the students to grasp the concepts.

Nice thank you note from the students!

"Leading Through the Turn" PRSA program

Elise Mitchell applies her motorcycling experiences to leadership.
I'm a member of the Public Relations Society of America, and the Phoenix Chapter holds programs and workshops throughout the year, including yesterday's "Leading Through the Turn" at KTAR-FM in Phoenix. Featured speaker was Elise Mitchell, author of a book by the same name as the program.  An accomplished strategic communications professional and business leader, she founded Mitchell Communications and grew it into one of the top 10 fastest-growing firms globally, a two-time Agency of the Year winner and an Inc. 500/5000 Fastest Growing Company. Prior to founding her agency she worked on both the agency and corporate sides of the business. She discussed, rather passionately, how to lead at your best, how to make the journey matter as much as the destination and how to reach the destinations that matter most to you. Because I was among the first 30 people to register, I received a free, signed copy of her book!
