No one threw a tomato at me!

Communications Manager at City of Fairborn, Ohio

Great conversation this week at the PRSA Dayton event hosted by Steven Solomon on creating an effective crisis communication plan. One thing working in TV news taught me early on: it’s not if a crisis will happen, it’s when. The organizations that respond best are the ones that prepare before the pressure hits. A strong crisis communication plan is more than a document sitting on a shelf. It’s about trust, preparation, clear messaging, and knowing how to communicate quickly and accurately when it matters most. I appreciated the practical insights and real-world discussion on how organizations can better prepare for challenging moments and protect credibility with their audiences. Thank you to PRSA Dayton and Steven Solomon for hosting such a valuable session!

COPIN: a regional organization of trained Public Information Officers and communication professionals

Honored to be elected to another three-year term to the board of the Central Ohio Public Information Network, which exists to increase awareness and education of the role of public information officers during a crisis, to assist with training opportunities that foster greater disaster communications skills among its members and to facilitate requests for emergency communication backup support from members able to assist qualified organizations that serve community needs. #EmergencyPreparedness #CrisisCommunications #CommunicationResources

On a crisis communications panel

That's me on the bottom left corner of the PPT slide.
I was on a panel at Sinclair Community College last month discussing crisis communications called "Media Day: Crisis Edition; Are you ready to communicate when a crisis hits?"

Others on the panel were Deb Decker, assistant director of communications, Montgomery County; Mary Ann Kabel, director of corporate communications, DP&L; and Lora Davenport, advocacy and communications manager, Dayton Food Bank. I represented the Dayton Chapter of the American Red Cross.

There was also a panel of local media that talked about what it’s like to cover a crisis, how they choose what stories to cover during a crisis, and how to better pitch about your organization when a crisis hits.

And there was a tabletop exercise on how to respond in a hypothetical crisis situation, the goal being to give talking points and ideas to take back to your place of business so you can be more prepared when a crisis hits.
