Steven Solomon has joined the board of Temple Israel, where he is a member of the Adult Education Committee. He also recently joined the executive board of the Miami Council of Scouting America. A former federal emergency response official, Steven is also on the boards of Preservation Dayton, Miami Valley Crime Stoppers, and the Lincoln Society of Dayton. He also proofreads for this publication.
I was honored to be emcee yesterday at the annual Excellence in Preservation Awards, an exclusive event for Preservation Dayton members and award recipients held at The Arcade.
We recognized our region's outstanding historic preservation leaders by selecting creative and dedicated preservationists in the following categories:
Dayton Historic Neighborhoods—Outstanding preservationist in each of Dayton’s officially designated historic neighborhoods.
At-large—Outstanding preservationist(s) for the greater Dayton region.
Lifetime Achievement—A major contributor to preservation causes over multiple decades.

properties recognized as endangered by Preservation Dayton
added
now to Ohio's most endangered historic sites list for 2022
Traxler Mansion and the Santa Clara
Business District selected
DAYTON,
OHIO— Two of Dayton’s Most Endangered Properties listed by Preservation Dayton, Inc.
(PDI) have been selected for the 2022 list of Preservation Ohio’s most
endangered properties in Ohio. There are 13 properties on the statewide
list.
The
two properties are:

The
Louis Traxler Mansion, a 1910-era 10,000-sq.-ft. French Chateauesque
residence designed for a downtown Dayton dry goods merchant. It was built for
Jewish Daytonians who were not welcome in traditional neighborhoods.

The Santa Clara Business District, which
occupies two blocks of North Main Street, contains one- and two-story
storefronts, some with apartments above and some attached to previously
existing turn-of-the-century houses.
“We are grateful that two of the properties on PDI’s most endangered
list have been selected for listing on Ohio’s Most Endangered sites and hope it
will catch the attention of a preservation-minded purchaser with resources for
the Traxler Mansion and a funding focus for the Santa Clara business district,”

Steven and Mary Solomon earned a pretty cool honor from Preservation Dayton Inc.
After purchasing a prairie-style house on Squirrel Road in Dayton’s Five Oaks
neighborhood, Steven and Mary fixed it up from top to bottom and for their
efforts received an Excellence in Preservation Award. They bought the house in
2018 and had structural improvements made to the roof, plumbing system,
fireplace, and chimney. The house — built in 1916 according to county property
records — was designed by Dayton architects Schenck and Williams, known for the
Engineers Club, Liberty Tower, and the Wright family’s Hawthorn Hill home. The
Solomons requested the city’s approval to rezone the property from HD-1
overlay, one of the least restrictive historic designations, to HD-2 overlay,
one of the most restrictive, and requires a certificate of appropriateness for
any exterior work. All boards voted to approve the rezoning, confirming that
the house is the finest example in the prairie-school style. It is now
designated as a Dayton Historic Landmark.
